Tulips spend most of their lives underground. The flower is only visible for relatively short periods, but the bulb quietly stores energy, develops and prepares for the next season.
This is a metaphor for learning. Most of the transformation happens where nobody can see it. The visible success is just the flowering of work that happened earlier.
